Compagnie Flak is a contemporary dance company based in Montreal Canada, under the direction of Venezuelan born choreographer José Navas. Creator of more than 30 pieces, his work can be recognized by his audacity and the usualness of the characters of his creations. Today, the words that best describe his work are: abstraction, sobriety, intensity and depth.

Arts… Useless?

In this video I try to explain how dangerous it is to under-estimate the necessity of public investment in culture — not only for artists but for the whole society.

I need to admit that I’ve never been a fan, or even sat in an audience of a modern dance show.

Listening to José Navas speak of his work captivates me. Comparatively to a museum guide who shows you where beauty lies in works that otherwise would never affect you if you where to just glance upon them.

Coming from a family that also depends on Canadian public funds, I agree that art and media, which doesn’t generate profit, still needs to be endowed.

For a comparison. Roman Polanski’s film, The Pianist, displays the necessity of art, even in the most dire settings. In this case, the most extreme. No matter how difficult our situation is, art is both a relief and a platform for creation, inspiration, release and escape. The compatriot and the enemy, will always protect art, because he needs it to survive.

If the government could translate the benefit of art into numbers, there would be no hesitation. Would there be?

Kim, thank you very much for your comment. I do agree with you. Further discussion is necessary on issues of art and funding. The solutions will come after accepting the importance of art in society. Culture plays an important role in any country’s economy.
